The presentation introduces methods and approaches of map and atlas analysis. Maps offer some challenges for research. They appear clear and unambiguous, but are constructs of their cultural, temporal and regional origins. Accordingly, they are read and interpreted differently by each user.  Starting from the question of how school atlases convey spatial knowledge under conditions of globalisation, we will focus on hermeneutic methods and comparative methods, using quantitative in combination with qualitative approaches. The aim is to internationally compare the "spatial language" of atlases and to utilise digital technologies for their analysis.
