Admission to the Graduate School is based on a formal written application and the collective decision of the GSGAS Board of Directors.

Selection Procedure

The selection procedure is based on the excellence of the applicants and the existence of qualified supervision by professors of the University of Leipzig. Prerequisites for admission are above-average grades in the Master's programme and a thematically suitable doctoral project. As the Graduate School is internationally oriented, applications from abroad are very welcome.

Applications are to be submitted in English or German and should include:

1. application form

2. proof of the highest academic degree achieved to date

3. an exposé or thesis proposal of up to 3,500 words with

  •   a clear statement of your research question
  •   an overview of the state of the art in science that justifies a dissertation in this specific field (including bibliography)
  •   a description of the sources/materials and methods to be used
  •   a detailed work plan

4. Curriculum Vitae

5. Two letters of recommendation from recognised academics.

Application deadlines

  • for the summer semester (i.e. April to September), applications have to be submitted before January 1,
  • for the winter semester (i.e. October to March), applications have to be submitted before July 1

Enrolment at Leipzig University

International PhD candidates

Some international PhD candidates need an official letter of admission from Leipzig University to apply for a visa in their home country.

In order to receive this letter of admission, PhD candidates must register at Leipzig University via the campus management system Alma Web. Once you are registered, you will be asked to submit various documents. As soon as these have been submitted and checked by the International Centre, you will receive the notice of admission from the Leipzig University.

As soon as you have arrived in Germany, please present your visa to the Foreigners' Registration OfficE and apply for a residence permit for study purposes.
