    Study of History in Leipzig

After my dissertation investigating movements resisting to the French revolution and a period of research on French-German intercultural transfers I focused my research on dimensions of a comparative history of historiography with emphasis on world history writing during the 20th century. More recently I worked on various aspects of global history since the 18th century and in particular on processes of respatialization of the world. This comprises the many scales at which human interaction happens, but also migration regimes and commodity chains. The emergence of many different spatial formats becomes more and more a challenge for what Jacques Revel called once the jeux d'échelles (playing with scales) and for which we coined the term spatial literacy. Examples from the histories of Western and Eastern Europe, from Sub-Sahara Africa and from the Caribbean feed reflections upon these rather theoretical concepts.
